Dr. Avila Cox
OPTOMETRIST

Dr. Cox was born and grew up in Halifax. She attended Dalhousie University earning a BSc followed by her Doctor of Optometry degree from the University of Waterloo. She returned to Nova Scotia and began working at Bedford Eye Care in 1998. Knowing this office was a great fit for her, Dr. Cox stayed on and became a partner in 2004. She is thrilled to see how much the office has grown since then and is proud of the quality of care the practice offers our patients.

Dr. Cox has been a member of the Nova Scotia Association of Optometry since 1998. Over the years she has been involved with the Low Vision Committee and AGM committee which plans the Association’s Annual General Meeting and Vision Expo. She is currently co-chair of the Practice Enhancement committee for the Nova Scotia College of Optometrists.

Dr. Erin Sheppard
OPTOMETRIST

Dr. Sheppard grew up in Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia and has been practicing since 2003 after graduating from the Doctor of Optometry program at the University of Waterloo. After working in HRM as a new grad followed by several years in Bridgewater, Liverpool and Cole Harbour, Dr. Sheppard was thrilled to join the team at Bedford Eye Care in 2012 where she became a partner later that same year.

Dr. Sheppard has been very active in her optometric professional organizations, serving on the Board of both the Nova Scotia Association of Optometrists and the Nova Scotia College of Optometrists for many years. In addition to her primary practice, Dr. Sheppard works with patients who have experienced vision issues related to a history of concussion.

Dr. Erin McLeod
OPTOMETRIST

Dr. McLeod was born and raised in Quispamsis New Brunswick. She completed a degree in Biology from the University of New Brunswick in 2002. She then attended the University of Waterloo School of Optometry and graduated on the Deans Honor List with her Doctor of Optometry in 2006. She worked in private practice in Brampton, Ontario and in her home province of New Brunswick before joining Bedford Eye Care in 2014, becoming a partner in 2015.

Dr McLeod has been involved with several committees within the optometric community in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. She currently co-chairs the Nova Scotia College of Optometrists Practice Enhancement Committee.

She is excited about all aspects of eye care and is interested in the growing field of myopia management in particular.

Dr. Susan Matthews
OPTOMETRIST

Dr. Matthews was born and raised in Gander, Newfoundland. After relocating to the HRM, she began her career at Bedford Eye Care, later becoming a partner in January 2019. She graduated from the University of Waterloo School of Optometry on the Dean’s honour list in 2016 after completing a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador in 2011.

Dr. Matthews has a special interest in providing pediatric care as she herself got her first pair of glasses at the age of 5 and has first hand experience with how important eye care is for child development. She is also passionate about dry eye therapy.

She is active in the optometric community and currently serves as Vice Chair of the Nova Scotia College of Optometrists.

Dr. Matthews is grateful to get to work with such a great group of individuals at Bedford Eye Care and enjoys helping the practice continue to grow.

Dr. Laura McMullin
OPTOMETRIST

Dr. McMullin was born and raised in Sydney on beautiful Cape Breton Island. She graduated with honours from the Doctor of Optometry program at University of Waterloo in 2010. She gained some wonderful practice experience with training at the Parkland Hospital in Texas, eye care missions internationally and private practice in both rural and urban Nova Scotia. Dr McMullin joined the Bedford Eye Care group in 2018 and becoming an owner in 2022. She is delighted to be setting down roots in the practice and community she calls home.

Dr. McMullin is passionate about access to eye care for less privileged populations. She is active chairperson for the community outreach committee for the Nova Scotia Association of Optometrists. She recently completing a global health course through Harvard University to further her knowledge in this field.

Dr. Holly MacPhee
OPTOMETRIST

Dr. MacPhee was born and raised in Souris, Prince Edward Island. She graduated from the University of Waterloo School of Optometry on the Dean’s honour list in 2020 after completing a Bachelor of Science in Biology from St. Francis Xavier University in 2014. Dr. MacPhee began practicing as an associate optometrist at Bedford Eye Care Centre in 2021.

Dr. MacPhee had the privilege to complete extensive clinical rotations in Specialty Contact Lenses in Melbourne, Australia and Ocular Disease in Miami, Florida. This provided her with increased exposure and knowledge of various ocular diseases and advanced contact lens fittings. Dr. MacPhee has special interests in specialty contact lenses and has a certificate in advanced contact lenses from the Australian College of Optometry.

Dr. MacPhee is passionate about helping others. She travelled to Senegal in 2018 to provide eye care to the local people. She plans to continue to do many more eye care trips in the future.

Dr. MacPhee is very excited to help our patients at Bedford Eye Care with all their eye care needs and is currently accepting new patients.
