Optometrist
Dr. Laura McMullin

Dr. McMullin grew up on Cape Breton Island, the oldest of two girls. After graduating high school from Sydney Academy she began university at St. Francis Xavier where she studied Biology. From there an interest in the human body and mechanisms of infection led her into the Immunology program at Dalhousie University. Before completion of the degree, she was admitted to the Doctor of Optometry program at the University of Waterloo in 2006.

Dr. McMullin’s desire to become an Optometrist was sparked at a very young age (nine according to old journals!) after watching her uncle build many wonderful relationships through a successful practice of his own.

Dr. McMullin graduated with an honours Doctor of Optometry from the University of Waterloo in 2010 after completing a four month ocular disease externship with Parkland Hospital in Dallas, Texas. She valued the opportunity to practice optometry in the hospital setting and developed a keen interest in management of diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, macular degeneration and the many eye related complications to poor general health.

In her spare time Laura enjoys surfing, golf, travelling and the humbling experience of eye care mission work and volunteer endeavours. She has worked with ICARE International, Canadian Vision Care and Project Connect San Francisco to provide free eye care and lenses to those without healthcare privileges. As chairperson for the NSAO Community Outreach committee Dr. McMullin coordinates yearly eye exams and glasses for underprivileged Nova Scotians through Project Connect events in both Halifax and Sydney. Laura is passionate about her efforts in this capacity and plans to do her next international eye care work in Malawi, Africa.

Dr. McMullin resides in the downtown area with her fiancé Gavin. They just recently welcomed twin boys Oliver and Lawson to the world!
